Anthropology
Anthropology is the study of human beings. We study anthropology because we want to affirm and celebrate life but in order to do so, we must first understand it in all it's firmness, all it's richness, all it's complexity, in it's incredible diversity.
The central insight of anthropology is the perception that each pattern of behavior, each human blueprint for survival is equally valid, worthwhile and creative.
Anthropology, in it's purest form, demands that we renounce our ethnocentrism, our tendency to judge what others do, solely by our own values and standards.
Anthropology is in a way a sort of absolute science, in the sense that it's holistic. It covers a wide area of other sciences, from which it derives its specializations.
The purpose of anthropology put in very simple terms, is to answer one of the most elusive questions of our time: "What does it mean to be human?"
It seems like a simple question but if we were to ask ourselves that, we would find that it is impossible to provide a simple answer.
With the emergence of life, came the unstoppable will to survive; The issue of survival in turn brought with it the necessity to evolve and adapt.
Roughly 100 000 years B.C. Man began writing the story of his evolution and adaptation "to" and "of" his environment, conceiving the blueprints for concepts like Culture, Society and Human Civilization.
Anthropologists main areas of interest were and still are the types of society that dominated the world until about 150 years ago and constituted 99% of human history.
If we think about hunters and gatherers, tribesman and peasants we realize that they are not specific only to the past, and that societies based on those blueprints still exist.
