Anorexia and Bulimia: Killer Eating Disorders

Anorexia and Bulimia

Two of the very common chronic eating disorders/diseases are Anorexia Nervosa and Bulimia Nervosa. Approximately 5-7% of American females suffer from an eating disorder at some point in their life. These diseases have a high mortality and a high morbidity rate. They are both classified as Psychiatric disorders. Research on these disorders is on the increase worldwide due to the amplitude of people that suffer from these diseases on a daily basis. Both of these disorders can cause extreme physical and mental damage. Physical damage, as well as damage to the vital organs and psychiatric damage are all ill effects of these diseases. Anorexia Nervosa is the most common eating disorder amongst adolescent females, ages from 9 years +. Adolescent age is common due to the extreme pressure that is felt in today’s society to be thin. The patient will deprive themselves of food for extended periods of time. The patient that suffers from Anorexia has a distorted perception of their body image. No matter how skinny the person truly is, or how far below their body mass index they fall, the sufferer still has the perception that they are overweight. Patients with Anorexia typically weigh about 15% below their ideal body weight. It is unfortunate to say that 6% of patients diagnosed with anorexia die, and about half the deaths associated with Anorexia are linked to suicide. Bulimia Nervosa is another type of common eating disorder. Bulimia is a very difficult disease to diagnose. The sufferers of this disease are usually not underweight, which sets it apart from Anorexia. The symptoms associated with Bulimia are also not as clear. The symptoms are usually extremely well hidden due to extreme guilt that is felt. The patient experiences occurrences of serious overeating, which is then followed by a massive feeling of guilt.
