It is easy to imagine homeless people as survivors; they are just like everybody else. Some of them live in shelters others live on the streets, or under bridges uncivilized. Some of them sleep on the ground on card board boxes and eat out of trash cans. Homeless people dress in all different ways, depending on where they are and how bad their case may be. The homeless man that caught my attention had on raggedy clothes, worn out shoes, an unshaved facial hair. His clothes were dirty and smelly, he smelled like he hadn’t bathed in weeks.
No one should experience homelessness; no one should be without a safe, stable place to live. I volunteer on the first Saturday of every month at the church I attend. We feed the homeless and offer other services, such as arts and crafts, and teach dance lesions. Our church bus driver goes to bridges, shelters and parks to find homeless people and to bring them to the church for food, a bath, socks, and toiletries. We give free haircuts, and wash women and children hair. And we provide a counselor for those who can’t cope.
Most of the people that come to the church are unemployed; some are substance abuse, or mental illness, or physical abuse. There are an increased number of homeless people due of the economy. A lot of people lost their homes to foreclosure. And they have they have nowhere else to go. Anyone can become homeless and loose everything they own. Some people try to commit suicide. And other carries on with their life. Homeless men and women are often visible on the street corners and parks benches, vacant building, and they sleep in doorways in most cities. Homelessness continues to be one of the most relentless and pervasive social issues in our communities. They are some of the neediest people in our community.
