The movie begins on Anne’s thirteenth when she receives a diary from her parents. At this time is just a regular girl living a normal live, well except for the fact that she is a Jew is Nazi occupied Amsterdam. Jews are forbidden to do most things at this time, such as going to the cinema or even sitting on benches. But as Anne puts it, at least they can still go out with the boys. The diary soon becomes Anne’s best friend, confiding in at all of her deepest thoughts. We are able to go deep into her mind and truly see what it is like for a Jew at that time. The beginning of the movie is interesting because we get to see Anne living a free life, she describes how she has many friends and that she has boys drooling over her. All of this soon changes though when Anne’s sister, Margot, is summoned in to appear before the authorities.

This is the moment when Anne’s whole life changes. Her parents have already made arrangements for them to go into hiding, at her father’s office building. She knew that the reality was that they would have to stay in hiding until the war is over. This is the end of any social life or interactions with outsiders. As a Jewish person living in this time, once you are forced to go into hiding, your whole life is turned upside down. Everything changes for you, and you must be fearful of your life, for it could be taken on any given day. This is an especially scary experience for a teenage girl like Anne. She must spend the days of her youth cooped up and hidden from the outside world. She cannot bear it, not being able to make any sort of noise basically all day, not even walking around in shoes or looking out the window. It really caused them all to enjoy the simpler things in life though, such as the clock tower bells or listening to the radio.
