The article "Ankle Biomechanics during four landing techniques," written by Brian P. Self and Daniel Paine is based on a study trying to reveal new ankle injury prevention during landings in a variety of sports. By performing a series of landing tests, the goal is to learn how to prevent ankle injuries in sports through knowledge and understanding of proper landing techniques. Four landing conditions from 30.48 cm in height were tested. The landings include: the natural landing where the participant could use whatever landing technique they would utilize during an actual sporting event, but they must remember to keep their arms above their head through the entire test; the stick it landing where the participant drops with minimal knee flexion, but without locking the knees while the arms remain above the head; sticking the landing and flexing one's calf muscles where the participant is trying to land as softly as possible by absorbing the impact through the toes and flexing the calf muscles while keeping the knees as straight as possible and with the arms remaining above he head; lastly, sticking the landing while landing more flat footed by the same type of landing but without flexing the calf muscles. These falls are the most important component to the study.
The different types of landings have been well thought out but this study could be more reliable with more than four types of landings. The landings are a crucial aspect but the study could have been more proficient with different heights of the landing. Some ankle injuries stem from shifts in weight or torque as opposed to the landing. Although landing is a key aspect there should be different heights of the landing as there would be in a sporting event setting. There should also be different torque movements involved in ankle injuries.
The selected participants are random but the age ranges from 23-40 years old. This could be irrelevant to the study because of the differences in a 23 year old...
