Anita Hill
During the George Bush administration there was a controversy between Anita Hill and Justice Clarence Thomas. Anita Hill was from Morris, Oklahoma, and was the youngest of thirteen children. Hill obtained her Juris Doctor degree with honors in 1980. She also attended Yale law school.

Anita Hill had worked as an assistant for Clarence Thomas. She was hired as a special counsel to Judge Thomas, who then headed the Office for Civil Rights in the Department of Education. She has said that it was while they were working together there that he first made inappropriate advances toward her. Thomas had asked her out socially before but after she refused, he wouldn’t take no for an answer. Anita Hill once stated, “He spoke about such matters as women having sex with animals and films showing group sex or rape scenes...” Hill dealt with this on a daily basis, until finally she stood up for herself and women everywhere. Because of the decisions that she made, there was public awareness of sexual harassment. According to Equal Employment Opportunity Commission filings, sexual harassment cases went from 6,127 in 1991 to 15,342 in 1996.

Another effect of the controversy was the increased role of women in politics. Women did not feel the Anita Hill trial as fair with 98% of the congress to be men. A record number of women ran for office that year and most were elected into congress. This was a huge accomplishment for women. Personally, I believe, that without Anita Hill, congress would consist of mostly men and there would be a predominant number of sexual harassment cases each year that were left unnoticed.

In addition to Hill’s trial, a second controversy arose within this past year that showed Anita’s poise and confidence. On October 9, Ginni Thomas called Hill and left a voicemail saying she wanted her to apologize to her husband.
