Animal lovers beware! Imagine living in a locked closet without any control over any aspect of life. They can not choose when to eat, how to spend their time, weather or not to have children, or who that partner will be. They can not even decide when the lights go on and off. Think about spending an entire lifetime like this even though nothing wrong was done. This is the lifestyle for an animal in a laboratory. It is isolation, deprivation, and misery. On top if the deprivation, there are the experiments. The ‘‘wonderful’’ U.S. law allows animals to be burned, shocked poisoned, isolated, starved, drowned, addicted to drugs, and brain damaged. No experiment, no matter how painful or trivial, is prohibited- and pain killers are not required. (Citron-Fink) There are alternative uses to animal testing available, but the law does not require that they be used; and often are not. Animals are infected with diseases they would normally never contract, tiny mice grow tumors large as their bodies, kittens are purposely blinded, rats are made suffer, and primates’ skulls are cut open and electrodes are implanted in them. Experimenters force-feed chemicals to animals, conduct repeated surgeries on them, implant wires in their brains, crush their spines, and much more. After enduring these terrifying, painful, procedures, animals are then usually dumped back into their cages without any painkillers. They do not know if they will be dragged from their prison cells for injection, blood withdraw, a painful procedure, surgery, or death. They often see other innocent animals killed right in front of them. No animals are safe from experimentation they use every single one. (Nakate) Most of the animal testing is done for cosmetics and household products; the ratio is 94% to 6%. The 6% is surprisingly medical research.
