Animal Experimentation in the U.S.
The fluffy little bunny looks up at you with pleading, moist eyes. It is trapped in a stock with its eyelids held open with clips as someone drops an in an irritating substance (FAQ par. 22). Can we really live with this? Animal experimentation, or vivisection, is often used for testing cosmetics, medical research, and education. This cruel act of taking advantage of them are not only unethical, but unreliable and costly. Animal experimentation should be banned completely from the United States.
It is selfish and arrogant that we exploit animals for our own benefit. This ethical problem continues on injuring and killing after so many deaths of innocent creatures. Even though they do not have the ability to sign a consent form, it is obvious that they are not happy when they break their necks by struggling to escape (FAQ par. 23). Animals do not gain anything out of being tested on, but it is only for our sake. However, it is not much help to us anyway because the results can be inaccurate.
Vivisection is unreliable and wasteful. The animals that are tested are not very similar to humans, therefore the results are different. For example, an AIDS vaccine was shown effective on monkeys, but failed in people. Dr. Richard Klausner, National Cancer Institute Director, says as quoted, “We have cured mice of cancer for decades, and it simply didn’t work in humans.” If the same cure is ineffective in humans, why do we continue experimenting on mice, who are nothing like us at all? Even though it may be wasteful, it can also be costly. (Collins pars. 4-5)
Animal testing can be expensive. For each small animal, prices can go up to $1,000 dollars. This all adds up to over twelve billion dollars a year in just one country! On average, each household pays three hundred dollars annually to funds through taxes. Do we really want to spend our money on something so cruel and unbeneficial?
