The cleanliness of a pet store has several effects on the animals in their care. Stress and potential for disease transmission is inherent in the transport and holding of animals in a retail environment.Animals are shipped to retailers in small plastic boxes with many other animals of the same species with limited air to breath. Once at pet stores,animal enclosures are cleaned every other week to save on substrate and are refreshed (adding ahandful of clean substrate) every other day. Bacteria and diseases flourish in these conditions leading to many sick animals.` `Animals in pet stores are often subjected to neglect. The animals are at the mercy of the pet store employees to receive food and water each day. Employees cutting corners to save time, lead to insufficient care resulting in malnutrition, starvation, and death. Individuals who purchase animals in pet stores often do so out of impulse without fully understanding the commitment required to provide life-long care for the animal. As a result of irresponsible human decisions, each year thousands of animals are surrendered to local shelters andrescues only to be destroyed due to lack of space, funds, and adoptive homes.` `Housing enclosures for animals in pet stores are crowed and dirty. To save room and display maximum variety of animals available for purchase, animals housing needs are overlooked. Pet stores keep their animals in small, overcrowded cages while ignoring species’specific needs such as diet, lighting, and heating. In some stores, you can find dead and dying animals in filthy crowded cages.` `Pet stores are made for the convenience of purchasing an animal. Like most of America today, convenienceis everything. Fast food sales are an excellent indication that our general public buys convenience. However,the convenience of animals being available for purchase on awhimcomes at great cost.
