Need: Thousands of animal are harmed due to pet owners’ neglect, over breeding and abuse. People buy and catch animals to keep as pets. Many of the people who have animals as pets do not know how to care for them. Pets, particularly ones like reptiles, amphibians, and fish, need special equipment, heat, lights, and food in order for them to be healthy and live. Between 50-90 percent of these types of animals sold each year dies because they were not cared for properly.You might say, they give companionship, pleasure and fulfill our needs so why should we care? We need animals to keep ecosystem working. Without even one species of many of the animals around us today, we can end up with a serious wrench in nature’s delicate balance. Exploiting animals means exploiting the larger environment that holds us alive.
Lifestyle and time: When you are away from home for hours in school or work, who will be at home with the pet? Do both parents work? It is unfair to take a pet away from its loving mother and siblings, only to leave it in solitary confinement in a new and strange and frightening environment away from everything he/she knows. On the weekends, do you go off with friends? Spend time with your pet? Will the novelty wear off in a month? This is not a toy, but a living being! This is a LIFETIME COMMITTMENT. You can't get tired of caring for the pet and dump him/her at the pound.

Remember, you want a good fit - not only for your family but most of all for the pet since he/she cannot speak for themselves and have to rely on the maturity, caring,and RESPONSIBILITY of the family that adopts it.
