PAPER 1 Answer one question from this Paper. Answers should be between 500 and 800 words in length. 1. ‘In today’s knowledge-based economy, what you earn depends on what you have learnt.’ Do you agree? 2. ‘The more educated one is, the less satisfied one is with life.’ How far do you agree? 3. ‘Poetry makes nothing happen’ (W.H Auden). To what extent can the arts bring about change in your society? 4. Should concern for man and his fate be the main priority of scientific endeavours? 5. Should we always extend kindness to others? 6. Examine the claim that our environment is ruined by greed. 7. Is courage necessarily a virtue? 8. ‘The empowerment of the individual has changed our world for the better.’ Do you agree? 9. ‘Harmony seldom makes a headline.’ Discuss this in relation to the mass media today. 10. ‘Men never do evil so completely and cheerfully as when they do it from religious conviction’ (Blaise Pascal). How far is this true? 11. ‘Sport is human life in miniature.’ Discuss. 12. ‘Happiness in marriage is entirely a matter of chance.’ To what extent is this true of marriage today?

The CCP is the ruling party of mainland China and the ROC is the de facto government of Taiwan.
