Comics were first featured in newspapers in the late 1800’s, starting with ‘Ally Slopers’ half holiday’ which was a political satire, aimed at adults. Due to high production costs and lack of accessibility to technology at that time, it was nearly always in black and white.
As the comic world progressed, children’s comics were born; these reflected the simplistic and innocent values of the time. Children were entertained and educated moralistically, at least until the arrival of ‘The Dandy’.
Dc Thomsons ‘ the Dandy ‘ , 1937 , took the comic industry by storm ,proving Dc Thomson can produce a instant hit for both boys and girls. This was mostly because its humour was basic, with idiosyncratic behaviour from iconic characters, which were carefully designed to enable the readers to empathize and relate to them, they also had to follow the regulations for comics to avoid moral panic. Notably ‘Lord Snooty ‘ an upper class child breaking free of the stereotype and giving working class children a dream day , an all you can eat buffet. He and many other characters were the main reasons children religiously brought this, and ‘The Beano later ‘comic.
In 1938, Dc Thomson produced another comic which pushed the industry further.’ The Beano ‘which was a comic, for the first time, that was celebrating naughty children, with its characters often seen being anti authority however, it always had a strong moral code. Even though authorities were regularly mocked or challenged, the authorities would always come out on top, showing good triumphs high over evil. This was greatly shown in 1951 when David Law created Dennis The Menace , a iconic character that was all the above and more.
