The Axial Skeleton consists of 80 bones, which make up about 40% of the bones in the human body, its function is to protect body organs, where as the appendicular skeleton, which is made up of 126 bones, assists movement.

Short | This is a short piece of cancellous bone tissue which is light in weight and coated with a thin layer of compact bone tissue. | Short bones provide support to the skeleton, helping to protect vital organs which are suspended inside. For example, |
Long | This is a tube of compact bone tissue with two ends that are made of cancellous bone tissue. These two ends are called epiphysis. | Long bones provide support to the skeleton, helping to protect vital organs which are suspended inside, they are a source of red blood cells and they also store minerals such as calcium. |
Flat | This is made from layers of both compact and cancellous bone tissue and is strong and lightweight. | Flat bones protect the internal organs and provide a large surface area for muscle attachment. |
Irregular | This is cancellous bone tissue which is coated by a thin layer of compact bone tissue. | Irregular bones are named so as they do not fit any of the other categories. Therefore, the function of irregular bones is dependent on the bones shape and position within the body. |
Sesamoid | This is an oval shaped bone which is embedded within a tendon. | Sesamoid bones assist with movement of the body. |

Bone Growth takes place in six main stages, these are as follows:
1. Foetus – endochondrial cartilage begins to develop where chondrocyte cells are laid down forming cartilage.
