Points to Consider:

For the final draft of your argument, remember these key points about effective research writing:

* Avoid informal use of "you" to address audience (2nd person). * Avoid using contractions.

General Introduction: You need a thesis paragraph which maps out the structure of your essay.

Specific Introduction: Provides an overview of the issue you are discussing. After the overview you need to explain the complexities of your issue. What are some of the solutions/ideas that have been used to address your topic? What are the relevant debates about your topic? You may use CREDIBLE (no Wikipedia or blogs) non-peer reviewed sources for this section of the essay.

Body: You need to explain how your 6 peer reviewed sources (3 from each discipline) investigate your topic. What types of research do they use? What specific claims do they make? What kinds of evidence do they use?

Conclusion: Restate your thesis and main points. Wrap up your main discussion and bring your central idea to a logical end.

Epilogue: State which of your disciplines provided the most comprehensive tools to analyze the issue. How do your two disciplines work together to illuminate the topic? Why is a multidisciplinary approach an advantage with looking at an issue?

MDS 489 – Thesis Statement and Outline
Due: Week Eight
This assignment is worth 50 points.

In this assignment you will write a thesis statement that will guide your analytical essay. You will also create an outline that details the main points and structure you will be using for your essay.

* A thesis statement establishes the main idea of your paper and serves as the basis for the entire discussion/argument/proof to follow. A good thesis statement should directly address every important component of your topic and tell the reader your main point as it relates to the topic.

* In addition, you must create an outline for your analytical essay. An outline will potentially help your writing in a myriad of ways, including:

* Aids in the process of writing
* Helps you organize your ideas
* Presents your material in a logical form
* Shows the relationships among ideas in your writing
* Constructs an ordered overview of your writing
* Defines boundaries and groups
