Analysis of Romeo: Christopher Boone
Christopher
In the book ‘the curious incident of the dog in the night time’ the author had created a very unusual teenager called Christopher Boone. The author used strange and unique techniques to create the effect Christopher brings to the readers. These techniques are; the way in which Christopher communicates, how Christopher describes himself, the way Christopher interacts with other characters and the comments of the other characters.
Dialogue
Christopher is the type of person who doesn’t know how to tell lies. It is not because he is a good person but because he can’t simply tell lies. “I do not tell lies. Mother used to say it is because I am a good person but it’s not because I am a good person. It is because I can’t tell lies” most people think that telling the truth is the quality of a good person. But to Christopher it is a way of life “He said, “Did you mean to hit the policeman?” “I said, yes”. This quote tells us that Christopher can’t lie even to get him out of trouble
The author also teaches us that Christopher is a very precise and logical person. This is shown by the way Christopher answers to others. He can’t understand sarcasm or jokes for this same reason. Christopher likes to know every single detail, so when you tell him a joke, he would want to break it down to every possible meaning it could have.
Christopher loves to give as much detail as possible. “She was wearing boots which looked like army boots and there were 5 bracelets made out of a silver-coloured metal on her wrist and they made a jingling noise.” Christopher does not shy away from detail. He notices what other people do not notice. The author may have made him act like this to give a hint that he is not a normal 15 year old teenager.
Narrative
The author has written the book in the 1st point of view, so every event that goes on in the book is exactly what Christopher has experienced. The author has given us information about Christopher from Christopher. He tells us

In the novel, Haddon explores the idea that using logic to communicate is not as effective as using emotion. Haddon emphasises that communication is sometimes problematic because of Christopher’s reaction to certain gestures and words. This is because in life, a simple gesture can ‘mean lots of different things.’ Christopher’s interpretation of certain words and gestures are much like in society, when people misinterpret sayings. In the life of Christopher, he is unable to communicate in a way that is ‘socially acceptable’, as he does not understand why phrases are said, instead, he says them because it is what ‘you’re meant to say’. Due to Christopher’s social attitude, it creates a lot of obstacles in which society deems him someone with ‘special needs’.…

From knowing every like and dislike of Christopher to taking care of all his needs, Christopher‘s father did a lot for him. When Christopher‘s mother went away to London with Mr. Shears, Christopher‘s father did not tell him about it, instead he told Christopher that his mother had passed away. Although, this seems like a horrible lie from a reader‘s perspective, Christopher‘s father made this decision by keeping Chistopher‘s best interest in mind. He said “I said she‘s in the hospital because…because I didn‘t know how to explain…”(114). It hurt Christopher‘s dad a lot by not being able to share his grief with his only child, but even Christopher admits “I didn‘t understand about other people having minds” (116). If his father confessed to Christopher that his mother had left them, it would…

Christopher doesn't like to be touched and finds it difficult to express affection as he ‘finds people confusing' because they ‘do a lot of talking without using any words'. When Christopher is told that his mother is in hospital he isn't upset by the news but excited because of the ‘uniforms and machines'. When she dies he doesn't feel sad because [he] would be ‘feeling sad about something that isn't real and didn't exist', once again proving that his disability has affected his ability to understand human emotions. When he arrives at his mother's house in London, her first reaction was to put her arms around Christopher. Christopher pushes her away because ‘[she] was grabbing [him]'.To Christopher, this is quite a normal reaction as he cannot understand the value of this highly emotional…

This opening sentence to the chapter is so emphatic because of the short sentence. The readers can tell that Christopher is not lying because he is so abrupt that he cannot possibly be lying as he seems so certain. The certainty of Christopher’s words in this sentence makes it almost impossible for us not to believe him. Christopher actually admits in the novel that ‘[He] can’t tell lies’. This makes us feel more certain that everything we read in the novel is true. This chapter is significant to the whole book because it is now that the readers understand that he doesn’t lie during the novel.…

Christopher changes when he decides to solve Wellington's murder since he must socialize with neighbors and strangers, something way out of his comfort zone. Because of his mental disability, he's not very good at having conversations and doesn't feel comfortable around people and has trouble understanding social cues. He also hates it when people touch or grab him, which leads to him getting arrested for hitting a police officer: "I didn't like him touching me like this. And this is when I hit him." His arrest happened when the police showed up to his neighbor Mrs. Shears's lawn, the scene of the crime.…

Throughout the book Christopher seemed very intimidated and afraid of his father. Christopher said “I had to get out of the house. Father had murdered Wellington. That meant he could murder me, because I couldn't trust him, even though he had said “Trust me,” because he had told a lie about a big thing”(Haddon 122). This quote shows that he is very scared of his father and Christopher does not feel safe being in the same house of his father. As a result of that it causes Christopher to run away from home. There are so many examples, but one other one is when they all meet up and all saw each other. Christopher was still scared to even see him. Christopher said “And then I heard someone opening the door of the flat and there was a strange man’s voice outside, so I locked the bathroom door. And there was a argument outside and a man said “ I need to speak to him,” and mother said “He's been through enough today already,” father said “ I know. But I still need to speak to him” (Haddon 194). This is important because he locked the door and stayed in the bathroom when his parents were outside. In this quote it shows that he doesn't want to see his father so he locked the…

Christopher also gets anxious about things with rules that are not followed. One example of this is lies. In the Bible it says, "You shall not lie." Christopher almost always follows this rule. "I don't tell lies… But it is not because I am a good person. I is because I can't tell lies" (19). Christopher only tells "white lies," which is like explaining your day but leaving some things out on purpose. Christopher's…

There are many different reasons why Christopher enhances the other characters. The way the author put Christopher is so different from any other book. Christopher isn’t like your ordinary boy and the way Mark Haddon has him seem is unlike a lot of books. I think the author enhanced the other characters by putting them into different situations that involve Christopher and it makes them a lot more interesting. Also, when Christopher explains what they are wearing when they see him and talking about how he knows the person really brings the character to life.…

He feels sick because his father had lied (Christopher does not like it when people lie). Christopher gets a headache and feels sick after finding out. Soon after his father found Christopher reading the letters, his father also admits that he had killed Wellington, which just made it too much for Christopher, and he decides he is not safe at home. He thinks that because his Father had killed the dog, he might kill Christopher. This particular event showed us that Christopher has strange thought patterns, even though he is a very logical thinker such as when he said "Prime numbers are what is left when you have taken all the patterns away. I think prime numbers are like life. They are very logical but you could never work out the rules, even if you spent all your time thinking about…
