EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

Organization is a place where cultural processes happen, but it is also an outcome of those processes working in society.

External forces create both opportunities and threats for the organization and they have a rippling effect on both the structure and culture of the organization.

Culture and strategy are not just related, or similar, but strategy is a cultural phenomenon and culture is strategy.

An effective organizational structure coupled with ethical culture in an organization increase efficiency.

1.INTRODUCTION

In the constantly changing environment that organizations operate in. It is imperative for organizations to regularly analyze the general environment that it operates in, in order to foresee the challenges and be able to combat the rippling effect that those anticipated challenges have in a proactive way.

This report will concentrate on the analysis of the external environment of the South African Broadcast Corporation (SABC) and highlight the effect that it has on the internal environment of the organization. The writer will make use of different sources of information collected both within and outside the SABC.

The South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC) is South Africa's national public service broadcaster with a strategic intent of ‘Broadcasting for Total Citizen Empowerment’ As such; it is obliged to provide a comprehensive range of distinctive programmes and services. It must inform, educate, entertain; support and develop culture and education; and, as far as it is possible, secure fair and equal treatment for the various cultural groupings in the nation and the country.

The report will first analyze how the external environment affect and influences the SABC and look into what implications that effect will have on the internal environment namely the structure and the culture of the SABC.

2. EXTERNAL ENVIRONMENT

Everything outside the organization comprises its external environment. The writer will analyze external environment of the South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC) and the main factors that might influence SABC over the next five years.

The general environment, sometimes called the macro environment, includes the external factors that usually affect all or most organization. The general environment includes the type of economic system, economic conditions, type of political system, and conditions of the ecosystem, demographics, and cultural background. Those aspects of the general environment produce the cultural, political-legal, technological and competitive forces that impinge on organizations (Hellriegel & Slocum 1996:78)
