The Analysis of Drugs in The Hills like white Elephants and Cathedral
Through an in depth reading of the hills like white elephant and cathedral shows that drugs are the cause to both their problems. Through this in depth readings there will be drug abuse and drug dependency. Both short stories talk about and use drugs as an out or escape from reality.
The story Cathedral by Raymond Carver is a story that shows a different view on the world between one blind man and one man that can see. Now the blind man Robert can see better than the husband in the story because he is more open and more aware of what is going around him at all times. As for the husband in the Cathedral he is blind and he is more blind to the truth that his marriage is failing him and can’t see why.
In the very first few pages there is a textural moment that states that drugs may already be a problem that when the wife says “are you crazy?” my wife said “Have you just flipped or something?” She picked up a potato. I saw it hit the floor, and then roll under the stove. “What’s wrong with you? “She said “Are you drunk?” (Carver, 1983) Now in this moment there must be some history of the husband drinking in excess and causing trouble. She asks are you drunk like this is a normal thing he must do. Also the anger behind her saying is emprises the fact that he has done this before and that the drinking causes problems in their life.
There are many moment in this story were it refers to alcohol and that’s the point this authors is trying to make that all the references mean something. For example as soon as his wife leave to pick up Robert he has a drink and right before his wife comes in with Robert he rinses the cup and dries is and his had to make it look like he never drank before Robert got there.
