The movie “Bend it like Beckham” is about a young Indian girl trying to break stereotypes and adventure out to be a great soccer player just like her hero David Beckham. The main character Jesminder Bhamra, nicknamed Jess, wants to play soccer but her parents have a different plan for her. The parents want their daughter to leave sports and focus on finding a husband just like her sister Pinky did, by marrying a nice Indian man and learning how to cook. Jess is trying to fulfill her dreams without damaging her relationship with her parents. Jess has adapted to the western culture, while her parents are more traditional and hold on to their own Punjabi culture. The movie revolves around Jess pursuing her dream, while maintaining a good relationship with her family. Jess is not interested in following her sister’s footsteps of just being a domestic wife. Jess has many obstacles in her way of fulfilling her dream of being a great soccer player. First, she’s an Asian female trying to break into a male dominated sport. Secondly, her parents do not want her to play soccer; instead they want her to focus on being a good housewife. Jess finds hope in pursuing her dream when she encounters Jules, who is a soccer player for an all women non-professional team. Jules sees the potential in Jess and encourages her to follow her dream by joining a women’s soccer team. Jules convinced by Jess’ talent, persuades the Coach Joe to give her a chance. After watching Jess in her first practice, Joe was very impressed with her skills and agrees with Jules that Jess would be an asset to the team.

Jess’s Punjabi culture limits her because it holds a certain image of what a women should be. Following in the traditions of the Punjabi culture, Jess’s mother want her to find a husband, learn how to cook traditional foods while also pursuing a career in law.
