Summary of “It´s Not About the Video”
According to “It´s Not About the Video” an article published in the New York Times by Ross Douthat in September of 2012, the real cause of the mob violence is not the video released , that is just an excuse for Islamists to create commotion and violence. She claims it was a mistake from the American Embassy in Cairo to apologize and take the video down from YouTube, regarding free speech. Moreover he describes the situation as an “old-fashioned power politics” and compares the event that happened in Britain regarding how the novelist Rushdie treated Islam´s Prophet, the video released and the in competitive way in which the British and American governments handled the situation. He emphasizes the conduct of such governments qualifying it as “pointless” and again commented on the big mistake that would be if people thought that an apology from Rushdie or a phone call from the anti-Islam film´s promoters would make the protests and violence subside as all this problems are just a way to cover up all the “predetermined violence” people want to cause. Finally the author concludes that for a real view of the problem it is needed to really understand the root that causes all this violence.
