An Essay on the Pearl.
The Pearl Essay
Do you ever feel like you cannot do anything about something? Well, that is what Kino felt like in ‘The Pearl’ when the doctor would not help him with Coyotito’s scorpion sting. Different people have both positive and negative impacts on different communities. The doctor has both positive and negative impacts on Kino’s family. In addition to that, the doctor has a negative impact on the villagers. The doctor has a servant as well and the doctor has a bit of a negative impact on the servant.
The doctor has both positive and negative impacts on Kino's family. First, he gives an excuse to not help them with Coyotito's sting, and then later, he helps them because
Kino gets the pearl and the doctor then knows that he can get paid. You can tell that the doctor can be selfish and greedy and that he will not work without getting paid.
When the doctor goes to Kino's brush house to help Coyotito after Kino got the pearl, he said 'I was not in when you came this morning. But now, at first chance, I have come to see the baby.' he said on page 28 of 'The Pearl'. This quote shows that the doctor is selfish because it is only when Kino gets the pearl that the doctor shows up.
This gave Kino a tremendous amount of rage. Here is another quote that shows the doctor is selfish; 'When do you think you can pay this bill?' the doctor said on page
34 of 'The Pearl'. The doctor can be selfish, but at least he succeeded in saving
Coyotito and he can live a little longer!
The doctor had a small and negative impact on the villagers in Kino's village. He is racist to them and he will not help them because they do not have any money to pay for the treatments, they are not very wealthy. This quote shows that the doctor will only work for money; 'Has he any money?' the doctor demanded. 'No, they never have any money. I, I alone in this world am supposed to work for nothing- and I am tired of it. See if he has any money!' the doctor exclaimed on page 11 of 'The Pearl'. This shows that the doctor will not help the poor, even in a life or death situation! A quote to show that the doctor is racist is; ' Have I nothing better to do that cure insect bites for "Little Indians". I am a doctor, not a veterinary.' said the doctor on page
11 of 'The Pearl'. All of this shows that the doctor will only work for the wealth, not for the pride of being able to save someone's life!
The doctor has a servant, and the doctor has a little bit of a negative impact on the servant. The doctor would make the servant do all the dirty work for him, he would

not even try to do his own dirty work himself. He would make the servant tell excuses to Kino's family as this quote shows; 'The doctor has gone out' he said. 'He was called to a serious case' the servant said on page 11 of 'The Pearl'. This shows that the doctor is too selfish to make excuses himself so he made the servant do it for him.
This also shows that the servant is loyal to the doctor. A question that the doctor made the servant say to Kino's family was; 'Have you any money to pay for the treatment?' the servant said on page 11 of 'The Pearl'. Remember to be kind to everyone, even the ones that are not as kind to you. You can tell a lot about a person by the way they treat their servant, but not always!
Overall, we can see that the doctor is racist, selfish and greedy. Different people have both positive and negative impacts on people and communities! Always try and only give positive impacts on the communities that you belong to, many people in the world give out negative impacts, we do not want to be one of those people!

The fourth physician is the brother-in-law of the Community Medical Center’s Chief Executive Officer. He simply takes advantage of his family ties with the Chief Executive officer to gain a grace period for completing his records for the sake of convince. The last two physicians, who had been left from the list Barbara explained, are simply handled with kid gloves because they tend to be general nuisances to the organization if things are not done their own way. After talking with Barbara, Maya felt it would be appropriate to share the issue to administration, assuming the senior administrators of the facility was equally as dedicated to calculating and reporting accurate statistics. Unfortunately, the Chief Executive officer says keeping the physicians happy should be priority, because without these six physicians being able to admit patients or schedule surgical procedures, the organization revenue would decrease. Atul Gawande sees the medical profession more as a business rather than actual healing. Today doctors get so caught up in mess of how much a particular surgery should cost that many forget about the patient’s care. At the beginning of “Piecework,” Gawande recently finished his residency and is looking to become an independent doctor. However, he was conflicted about how much they should pay him. He never thought or acted upon the annual salary of a new doctor before, because most doctors never boast about their yearly income. However, when he did ask certain doctors the conversation “turned out to be awkward…and they’d [mumble] as if their mouths were full of crackers” (Gawande 113). Gawande states that doctors should not have to respond, because their main goal is to take care and save the patients. The author explains certain things have a definite cost and one must follow those costs no matter how extreme they may be.…

In the end of the story,Kino is dealing with anger and greed and tries to resolve them by throwing the pearl into the ocean. “I am cheated” KIno shouts fiercely. “My pearl isn’t for sale here, I will go even perhaps the capital”. Kino is saying this because he wants more than the dealers are offering and he knows that he is being cheated. Another reason is saying this is because he will get more money in the capital than the city. “And a searing rage came to him giving him strength”. The only reason the rage comes to him is because he wanted the doctor to come and he knew that the doctor is in his house.…

On page four of the Empathy Exams, Jamison describes the types of doctors that she encounters as a medical actor. A medical actor is a person, normally low on cash, who portrays an ill patient as practice for physicians in training. They then grade the physician on an array of things from whether they get the correct diagnosis to empathy. Paragraphs three through four on this page illustrate this point in two examples of doctors: one who gets too immersed in the role with the fake patient and one who is too distant as if the patient is simply a business arrangement rather than someone’s life.…

Many times, doctors order medical procedures and drugs without thinking twice about the need. For example, Yvonne Osborn complained of severe chest pain which led to a heart attack. In a few years, she underwent twenty-seven cardiac catheterizations and over seven heart stents. When Yvonne turned to Cleveland Clinic as her last resort, Dr. Leslie Cho concluded that prior control of Yvonne’s diabetes, blood pressure, and cholesterol would have eliminated many catheterizations and stents. Lack of communication between the physician and the patient permitted financial gains for the doctor(s) who performed the surgical procedures for Yvonne. The physical and emotional distress Yvonne endured is far more important than the combined cost of care over the years of $1.5 million. Dr. Cho states, “But it’s more than the costs. It’s just so much more than the money. The psychological trauma of every one of those multiple cardiac catheterizations…every time she had a chest pain coming into the ER…And unfortunately, there are lots of Yvonnes out there” (Escape Fire). Dr. Cho is absolutely right. The body can only handle so much strain, and if unnecessary procedures are preventable, then financial incentives should not drive potential harm to the…

To start of with some background on the show, it is about a man called the Doctor. To be perfectly honest, he isn’t actually a man. He is an alien from a planet called Gallifrey, with two hearts. An important consideration which must be explained before any such questions can be answered is the distinction between medical justice and social justice. The sphere of medical justice involves the decisions doctors must make about providing medical care to those in need, while the sphere of social justice involves the allocation of resources by society those those in need. For doctors, medical justice makes answering the above questions relatively straightforward: they are obligated to provide medical care to those in need regardless of moral worth, dollar costs, or social status. Thus, doctors are ideally obligated by medical justice to provide the same level of medical care to other human beings regardless of any non-medical considerations. Social justice, however, requires different conclusions because society is required to make decisions that do include non-medical considerations. This means that while medical justice may require a question be answered one way, the larger sphere of social justice could lead to a different answer entirely.…
