ARRANGED MARRIAGES A THING OF THE PAST – DO YOU AGREE?
Marriage is a legal union of man and wife. In this day and age there are two different ideas of marriage. The first being a marriage based on love and the second being a marriage arranged by a third party. The arranged marriage is a contract between families, but not between individuals. On the other hand, a love marriage is a union of two individuals based upon mutual love, affection, commitment and attraction. The big question is - In our modern day age, are arranged marriages a thing of the past or are they just as relevant today as they were in the past? In my personal point of view I totally agree that arranged marriages is a thing of the past but disagree on the issue of an arranged marriage being superior to a love marriage. In modern day society people are exposed to much more than what people of the past have being exposed to. Therefore arranged marriages hardly ever take place in today’s times. Love marriages are prevalent in almost all the societies of South Africa, given the fact that they are still considered inferior to the weddings arranged by many parents in the country. People supporting the concept of love marriage strongly believe that it is very important to know the partner before marrying him/her. On the other hand, people who believe in sanctifying the wedding with the permission of parents and relatives think that arranged marriages are long lasting. When it comes to love marriages, the two people get married only after falling in love with each other and probably, after knowing each other for a long time. They get ample time to explore both the good and the bad things about each other before marriage. This helps them to develop a good comfort level after marriage, very effortlessly.
