Women: Right to vote American women fought very long for their right to vote. In the beginning of the 1920s they finally achieved this goal, but it was a long and hard fight and many women had to suffer to make it a reality. I want to tell you a bit about the example of Alice Paul and her friends, who put their lives on the line to fight for American women’s right to vote. Alice Paul was the leader of the Congressional Union, later called National Woman’s party, a military branch of the National American Woman Suffrage Association. The National Woman´s Party played an important role in gaining women’s right to vote.

For example they organized a parade of 8000 women through the streets of Washington, when President Wilson and his wife came back from a trip overseas on March 3 in 1913. They wanted him to give women the right to vote. However, the spectators (mostly men) were afraid of a loss of their own power should women vote and stopped the march before President Wilson saw it. I would like to show you a short excerpt of the movie Iron Jawed Angels, so that you can get a feeling for how the parade went. At the beginning everything seemed peaceful but then the spectators began to heckle and became more indignant. That finally ended in a riot, which ended the parade. When America joined WWI in 1917, the situation became even more difficult and dangerous for Alice Paul and the other women fighting for their rights. The reason for this was that it was seen as treason to picket a wartime president and they could be jailed for that.
