Introduction

Information technology system is a really important sector for banks. There are several benefits can get from bank as follows. Not only can it speed up operation, but increase reliability in bank industry as well. Also, information technology can reduce the cost significantly from world wide networking. These days, if a bank doesn’t have a sound information system, it might be hard to compete in this aggressive market; which means an information technology system becomes a necessary element in banking industry.

American International Bank background

American International Bank (AIB), a major money center bank, focuses on wholesale banking service. The American International Bank has eleven branches worldwide and its headquarters is in New York. AIB developed personalized customers service successfully. In addition, each branch manager meets with its client companies once a month. AIB doesn’t have a sound integrated information system, so if Tamara Long who is the head of the international department at AIB wants to search client records for loans to businesses, Tamara must call each branch to search manually. Moreover, it takes more than one month to get the report which had been discontinued over six months. AIB could not give the report immediately and provide the exact accurate data. Also, Tamara usually gets the reports were three months behind.

Analyze AIB of the issues

Based on the AIB case, there are a lot of problems AIB faced in its information technology system. First of all, AIB had no integrated information system in the international department which means each branch had to search the client data by hand. Additionally, AIB didn’t have a standard network infrastructure. Each branch has its own computer system. For example, London branch use a legacy IBM 4300 system, but other offices use Microsoft Windows-based desktop systems. Also, there is a critical problem that all branches can not communicate to each other directly. Each branch manager meets in New York every three months to report the past three months, share ideas and discuss future plan. Furthermore, the security policies and software in AIB are not standard. Last but not least, there are no communicated tools between each branch. If client went to each branch to draw money repeat, no branch know this transaction already done in other branch. This might be really dangerous for a bank if every client goes to different branch to draw down money which exceeds a specific limit. However, this project would focus on two of the major issues which are no sound integrated information system in international department, and no communication tools between branches.
