Chapter 1
INTRODUCTION

I. INTRODUCTION
Terrestrial broadcasting occurs close to the earth. It encompasses radio and TV signals that travel only a short distance in the earth’s atmosphere. AM and FM radio are terrestrial broadcasting forms as is a new form of digital radio that is called in-band on-channel (IBOC ) radio. The parts of the electromagnetic spectrum that are most important to these services are 88-108MHz, where FM resides and 535-17o5 KHz the home of AM.

AM was the dominant method of broadcasting during the first eighty years of the 20th century and remains widely used into the 21st .Amplitude modulation is a technique use for transmitting information via a radio carrier wave. AM works by varying the strength of the transmitted signal in relation to the information being sent. The process of radio broadcasting using amplitude modulation is the AM broadcasting. Commercial and public AM broadcasting is carried out in the medium wave band worldwide, and on long wave and short wave band also. AM radio began with the first, experimental broadcast on Christmas Eve, 1906, by Canadian experimenter Reginald Fessenden, and was used for small-scale voice and music broadcasts up until World. The great increase in the use of AM radio came late in the following decade as radio experimentation increased worldwide following World War I. Radio programming boomed during the golden age of radio 1920’s-1950’s. Dramas, comedies and other forms of entertainment were produced as well as broadcast of news and music. AM broadcasting now attracts mainly talk radio and news programming because of its susceptibility to atmospheric and electrical interference.

In telecommunications and signal processing, frequency modulation (FM) conveys information over a carrier wave by varying its instantaneous frequency. This contrast with amplitude modulation in which the amplitude of the carrier is varied while its frequency remains constant. In analog applications, the difference between the instantaneous and the base frequency of the carrier is directly proportional to the instantaneous value of the input signal amplitude. Frequency modulation is known as phase modulation when the carrier phase modulation is the time integral of the FM signal. Fm is widely used for the broadcasting music and speech, two-way radio system, magnetic tape recording system and some video transmission system. In radio systems, frequency modulation with sufficient bandwidth provides an advantage in cancelling naturally occurring noise. FM broadcasting is pioneered by Edwin Howard Armstrong which uses frequency modulation (FM) to provide high-fidelity sound over broadcast radio.

II. OBJECTIVES
* To be able to establish a quality AM/FM Station
* To be able to know the different technical aspectsin establishing an AM/FM station. * To understand the flow of communication in a radio station. * To be able to identify the different equipment its uses and how it will improve the station. * To be able to know the problems that the station encounters and how do they solve it.

I. STATION PROFILE and HISTORY
Radyo DZLB (1116 AM) is a radio station located in Los Baños, Laguna in the Philippines. It owned and operated by the University of the Philippines Los Baños- College of Development Communication. Its studio is located the DZLB Broadcast Studio, 2nd Floor College of Development Communication Building, UP Los Baños, College, Laguna. It is being used as an experimental radio station of the Department of Community Broadcasting. Its programming includes music programs and request shows, informative segments and talk shows and School-on-air programs. Radyo DZLB was established in 1964 by the University of the Philippines Los Baños  to provide educational programming to rural communities surrounding  Los Baños.
