Aluminum Foil Lab
Title:
Thickness of Aluminum Foil

Purpose:
The purpose of this lab is to determine which brands of heavy duty and regular aluminum are the best to buy based on their price and their thickness.

Equipment/Facts:
Aluminum foil (various types & brands)
Calculator
Scissors
Metric ruler

Balances
Density of aluminum= 2.70 g/

Materials:
Types and Brands of Aluminum Foil:
Stop & Shop heavy duty. Cost: $2.19 for 4.64
Stop & Shop regular. Cost: $1.99 for 6.96
Reynolds heavy duty. Cost: $2.59 for 4.64
Reynolds regular. Cost: $2.59 for 6.96

Procedure:
In order to perform this lab correctly the following procedures should be followed:
1. The scientists should cut a square of aluminum foil of each type, and make sure the measurements of the square are accurate. So all sides of each aluminum foil square should be the same measurement. At the end of this step the scientist should have 4 different pieces of aluminum.
2. Then, the scientists have to weight each piece of aluminum foil, making sure that each square they weight is heavier than 1 gram.
3. The next step is to figure out the thickness of each piece of aluminum foil by using two different equations, which are:
a. V=l•w•t
b. D=m/V
4. Since the scientists have to find the thickness of each piece of aluminum, they have to substitute l•w•t for V into the D=m/V equation.
5. Finally, the scientists should plug in the data they have obtained into the equation, and then solve for t, which represents the thickness. After this last step is completed, the scientists should have obtained the thickness of each square of aluminum.
6. For this particular experiment the scientists should insure that their answers have three significant figures.
How do they insure that they have 3 significant figures in their answers?
In order to make sure that their answers have three significant figures they have to do the following:
a. Make sure that when weighting the aluminum foil the answer has 3 significant

In measuring substances in the lab, reporting data, and performing calculations, it is both crucial important to be as precise and accurate as possible and also not to report false data. The rules of significant figures (digits in a measurement that reflect the measurement’s accuracy) allow us to have a methodical means of ensuring that the data and calculations we report reflect the accuracy that the equipment or data provide. To follow the guidelines for the correct number of significant figures, it is important to know the rules for multiplication and division, for addition and subtraction, for rounding, for measuring, and for scientific notation.…
