ALTERNATIVE MEASURES OF ECONOMIC GROWTH AND PROGRESS
ALTERNATIVE MEASURES OF ECONOMIC GROWTH AND PROGRESS

What are some limitations of the Gross Domestic Product measure and some ideas for improving it?
GDP has four major limitations:
It includes the replacement of depreciated capital.
It measures income produced in a country but not how much income people in that country re-ceive.
Since GDP only counts monetary transactions (including esti-mates for those in the shadow economy), it misses many other ac-tivities that people value like caring for children or elderly at home. GDP includes many items that do not boost human well-being.
For improve it:

Adjusting GDP.
Replacing GDP.
Supplementing GDP.

Other indicators:

Measure of Economic Welfare.
Index of Sustainable Economic Welfare.
Genuine Progress Indicator.
Human Development Index.
Ecological Footprint.
Genuine Savings Indicator.
Happy Planet Index.
Satellite accounts.

Genuine Progress Indicator

GPI figures cannot be derived without the GDP numbers and both can complement each other very well.
Measurements that make up the GPI include:
Income Distribution
Housework, Volunteering, and Higher Education
Crime
Resource Depletion
Pollution
Long-Term Environmental Damage
Changes in Leisure Time
Defensive Expenditures
Lifespan of Consumer Durables & Public Infrastructure
Dependence on Foreign Assets
If instead of Gross Domestic Product (GDP), for the individual there is no one gonna pay tax (individual, business) if people and business don’t pay tax then there is no government and there is no pension and city construction etc because the gonvernment don’t have money. Foreign capital gonna get lower.

The Black Market, a market where regulations and laws are not practiced when there are exchanges of goods and services, and underground activities are not included when computing GDP. The reason for this is because there is not a method in accurately being able to measure black market activity. Another measurement error is inflation. “It is adjusted according to base prices and various other things and the range of possible inflation can be as much as 1% to 15% in some…

On the other hand there are many costs of using GDP it ignores key variables like how depressing China is, it also counts negative and useless activity, it does not show the spread of wealth across the population and the income distribution. GDP also does not show a country’s debt, for example in Argentina around 15 years ago they took out a huge amount of debt and because of this new money, it looked like it was doing amazingly well with huge increases in GDP but at the moment they have been caught up with the debt and are…

Gross domestic product also known as GDP is the total value of all goods and services produced in the economy during a specified period of time, such as a year or quarter. GDP is very important to the American economy because it effects each individual in some type of way. Improvements in the economic well-being of individuals in any society cannot occur without such an increase in real GDP. When real GDP per capita is increasing, then the well-being- or the standard of living- of individuals in the economy, is improving. When measuring GDP it is important to keep nominal and real GDP in mind. There are three main approaches to measuring GDP, the expenditure approach, product approach and the income approach. While GDP helps measure the American economy there are different types of money transactions that are not included in GDP.…
