¿Cómo alinear la estructura organizacional con la estrategia de desarrollo?

Toda organización, pública o privada, tiene unos objetivos y unas metas que alcanzar, para lo cual es necesario hacer una planeación en donde la estructura organizacional y la estrategia de desarrollo se encuentren alineadas. Adicionalmente, las organizaciones están en constante cambio con el fin de mantenerse competitivas. No necesariamente se cambian todos sus elementos al mismo tiempo, pero todos están interrelacionados (basado en el principio que la organización es un sistema) y es por ello que se deben modificar las conexiones entre las diferentes partes de la organización, para lo cual, es muy importante tener una estructura bien definida y alineada con la estrategia de desarrollo.

Diferentes investigadores han resaltado la importancia de alinear la estrategia de desarrollo con la estructura organizacional para lo cual han propuesto algunos procedimientos. En el 2006 Robert S. Kaplan y David P. Norton se refirieron a este planteamiento en el tercero de los cinco principios que identificaron: “Principle 3: Align the organization to the strategy”. Afirma entonces que para alinear los sistemas de medición y manejo de una organización con la estrategia, es necesario alinear la organización a la estrategia (Kaplan & Norton, 2006, p.vii). Por su parte, Michael Beer plantea que un alineamiento entre estrategia y estructura es lo que permite a una empresa desarrollar habilidades, actitudes y comportamientos necesarios para competir exitosamente y que por ello es algo que las compañías deben revisar constantemente. De otro lado, Christopher Meyer cree que las organizaciones funcionan mejor en ciclos de corto tiempo, pero que para ello es necesario un alineamiento estratégico, para lo cual ha desarrollado el modelo: Strategic Alignment Planning Model que consta de tres etapas de planeación estratégica.
