A musician, born Alicia Augello Cook on January 25, 1981 in New York, NY. Blending pop, gospel, R&B, and soul music. Alicia Keys entered the music world in 2001 with her debut album Songs In A Minor. Alicia was raised by her mother, Nikki Augello, a part time actress and paralegal. She began to play the piano at the age of 7, and her mother insisted that she would stick with that instrument and attend Manhattan's Professional Performing Arts School where she majored in choir. She exceeded academically and was allowed to graduate at the age of 16. During her high school years, Alicia had the attention of many record company executives. After a bidding war for her talents, she signed a record deal with Clive Davis, head of Arista Records in 1998. Alicia was accepted to Columbia University on a full scholarship, but after four weeks of school, she left to devote herself fully to music. (A+E Networks at In 1999, Clive Davis left Arista Records to create J Records. Alicia decided to follow Clive to his new label. Unlike many other artist, Alicia not only sing, but she also write and produces her own music. While signed to J Records, she had the freedom to complete her debut album, which also had material she had started working on before. (A+E Networks at Clive organized series of television and small venue appearances before the album was released. When it was finally released, Songs In A Minor went platinum five times. At the 2002 Grammy Awards, Alicia took home awards for Song of the Year, Best R&B Song, Best R&B Album, Best Female R&B Vocal Performance, and Best New Artist. Another album of hers, The Diary Of Alicia Keys, also won four Grammys in 2005. Alicia Keys has made six different albums in total, Songs In A Minor, The Diary Of Alicia Keys, Unplugged, As I Am, The Element Of Freedom, and her latest one Girl On Fire.
