◦Dad was a prosperous and wealthy, self-made textile manufacturer who started as a peddler. ◦Alfred and one of his brothers were the only ones in the Dreyfus family to receive a full French education. ◦Moved to Paris after The Franco-Prussian War because Alsace was annexed by the German Empire. ◦Alfred married Lucie EUGENIE hadamard ON April 18th 1891 when he was 32 and she was 21. ◦2 kids → Pierre and Jeanne.
◦During this time there was anti-semitism in France but nothing too serious.
◦In 1880, Dreyfus graduated as a sub-lieutenant from the elite École Polytechnique military school in Paris, where he received military training and an education in the sciences.
◦From 1880 to 1882, he attended the artillery school at Fontainebleau to receive a more specialized training as an artillery officer. (artillery is when troops or military units specialize in using weapons of war).
◦ Three days after the wedding, he received a letter that he had been admitted to the École Supérieure de Guerre (a War College).
◦Two years later, in 1893, he graduated with honorable mention and was immediately became a trainee in the French Army's General Staff headquarters, ◦he was the only Jewish officer in his quarters.
