Alcohol on College Campuses – Changing the Culture
For many years, college has brought the best and worst out of students. Consider these well known adages: ”College is the best time of your life. When else are your parents going to spend several thousand dollars a year just for you to go to a strange town and get drunk every night?” When college students engage in risky drinking behaviors, that line between good times and bad decisions gets very blurry. College really has become a dangerous stomping ground for students to engage in binge drinking, simply defined as a heavy consumption of alcohol in a short period of time. At this time when college students have the ability to make their own decisions, many of them unfortunately are not the wisest. I have seen and heard about this at Rollins. Students drinking to the point of throwing up and missing classes after partying really hard the night before. Kids have walked into Ward Hall stumbling and slurring their speech, barely able to make it back to their room. When alcohol creates behaviors such as these, it has gotten to a point where it’s over the limit of innocent fun. Binge drinking is a serious issue among college students and administrators must do more to combat it to alleviate the accompanying health risks, academic problems, and threats to the community.
One of the issues with college drinking is the numerous health risks it presents. It slows brain activity that controls judgment and inhibitions (Myers). It leads to slowed neural processing, memory disruption, and reduced self-awareness and control. There is also reduced physical coordination and mental alertness, poor decision making, and slurred speech. In the long term, alcohol increases the risk for liver and heart disease.
