ABSTRACT This paper examines the popular myth that sometimes an artist needs a dose of a psychoactive substance to drive the creative process to make his vision wider. There are many well-known examples in history of successful musicians, artists, politics, writers etc. that have some pernicious habits. Can we call alcohol and drugs catalysts of creative process and only due to them the talent can be manifested? Creativity and psychoactive substances have a long and close relationships, from hallucinogens consumed by shamans during rituals to, for example, the use of opium by Sherlock Holmes in Arthur Conan Doyle’s books, from the work of Carlos Castaneda who devoted a poetic ode to drugs, to “the Beatles” and other rock singers who openly admit they use drugs.

INTRODUCTION

Importance of topic From time immemorial there were undertaken attempts to understand why people bring themselves into a state of intoxication and stupefaction that causes them to voluntarily plunge into uncontrollable element of madness, as it is now fashionable to say “remove the boundaries of consciousness”. It’s a madness that has become a temptation that makes people interested since some individuals began to take drugs on their own. According to them, the drugs gave them the opportunity to plunge into a completely different experience, free from the usual bonds of everyday forms of ordering perception of the world, opened the way for an unusual, non-standard values and images. Motivation to escape from the “gray reality,” the desire to overcome the monotony of one’s life has always been the basic needs of the soul. Even the threat to health and human life rarely stopped people along the way of using psychoactive substances. Freedom of dreams, even frightening attracts a civilized man truly powerfully. The word “artist” has several meanings: painter, creator, art worker and art can mean any of higher-level creative work in any area. After all, there are idioms: “He’s Artist in his business!” or “It’s a real art of teaching.”

Scientific look on creation The most popular model illustrating creative process now is Graham Wallas’ model. In his work Art of Thought, published in 1926, Wallas presented one of the first models of the creative process. In the Wallas stage model, creative insights and illuminations may be explained by a process consisting of 5 stages:

(I) preparation (preparatory work on a problem that focuses the individual’s mind on the problem and explores the problem’s dimensions), (II) incubation (where the problem is internalized into the unconscious mind and nothing appears externally to be happening), (III) intimation (the creative person gets a “feeling” that a solution is on its way), (IV)...
