ABSTRACT

This research would emphasis on the effects of substance abuse on employees of an organization and towards their performance. The company taken into consideration for this research is TESCO. The research involved survey design where 150 respondents were purposively selected for responding to the semi structured questionnaire. For this research the researcher has built 2 hypotheses which were tested and the final results from the analysis framed that workers who abuse substances are expected to perform

With a strong and well trained team the company can move forward at a swift pace producing quality products for the company covering the cost of the drug testing and increasing over-all economic growth of company. Just like in your personal life, drug abuse affects the workplace. Some of the most common symptoms of a drug abuser in any work place are absenteeism productivity, and morale. Most co workers will start to notice the lack of time spent on the job, or the multiple times calling in sick. Eventually a lack of interest for work comes along. For careers having to do with manual labor, a drug abuser will start to become lazy and not complete projects in a timely manner. For less labor intensive careers a lack of integrity for work can be noticed. When general morale starts to be observed such as depression or anger; the morale is not just affecting the drug abuser but the entire company. Co workers will no longer tolerate the attitude causing anger through out the workplace. Some symptoms that are not easily detected are the accidents, theft, and turnover. Depending on the intent of the company, an accident here or there can lead to the nickname of accident-prone. Theft will not be just at the workplace but also in personal life. Drug abusers start by stealing from family and friends and lead to workplace theft. According to National Institute of Drug Abuse; “Sometimes they steal property to get money for drugs. Or often they will commit crimes while “high” on drugs.” A thorough background check and drug screen should help prevent an up and coming abuser.     There are many differences between an annotated bibliography and a literature review. An annotated bibliography is a compilation of citations, and this provides the reader the information needed to locate references. A literature review is based on a particular problem with some scientific knowledge and the current theoretical information. The annotated bibliography includes a description and explanation of the sources; a basic citation does not contain this (Carlson, 2003). Published studies have literature reviews that contain the background from which the problem was studied. The citing of sources and the compiling of a bibliography are the action that helps to prove a valid research has been performed.     Drug abuse by employees in the workplace is a major concern for many employers Approximately 16.4 million drug abusers and 15 million heavy alcohol users are employed full time.(www.samsha.org.gov/newsroom/ advisors/070713survey0610.aspx) 8 % of full time employees and 10.2 % of part time employees abuse drugs in the work place. (drugrecognition.com) Employers in the private industry are not required to have a drug free workplace policy. If an employer does adopt a drug free workplace policy, they should follow typical policy guidelines and make sure to implement the policy without jeopardizing employee’s legal rights. If an employer does implement a drug free work place policy, they are face with many issues such only having a written policy or including a drug testing policy.     Military Veterans face many life changing stressors while away on active duty as well as when they return home. To cope with the stress, drugs and alcohol become a way to self-medicate and cover the unseen pain. Substance abuse, because of Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), is a coping mechanism for some of the nation’s Veterans, but with proper medical attention, treatment is possible. PTSD can occur after a traumatic event, in which there are four types of symptoms: reliving the event or flashbacks, avoiding situations that may trigger memories, and feeling numb or detached from life (“United States Department of Veteran Affairs”, 2013). Many classifications of drugs are abused to help cope with the different symptoms of PTSD.
