1. Introduction

Bharti Airtel Limited, is the world’s third largest provider of telecommunication services with presence in the 22 licensed jurisdictions in India and having operations in Sri Lanka, Bangladesh and Africa, with an aggregate customer base of 252 million as of March 31, 2012 & Total revenue of LKR 450bn for the last financial year (2011-2012)

Hence, proper identification and focus on its critical success factors and appropriate human resource management strategies have enabled them to continuously improve their processes.,

This paper analyses the human resource activities and policies of the Human Resource department at Airtel Lanka (pvt) Ltd for below areas.

1. Recruitment & selection 2. Training and development 3. Maintaining employee discipline

By critically analyzing the current processes on above topics, it will link the company’s goals and strategies with the outcome of the employees through human resource activities. Finally it suggests the improvements through human resources theories and also discusses the ways to apply them to the organization.

2 Introduction – Bharti Airtel

Bharti Airtel Limited, is the fifth largest telecom operator in the world with over 252 million customers across 20 countries. It operates a GSM network in all countries, providing 2G or 3G services depending upon the country of operation.

Airtel is not only a mobile telecom service company any longer, but now a total communication service provider ranging from mobile telephony to fixed telephony and broadband to television subscription.

Sunil Bharti Mittal founded the Bharti Group in 1983. In 1986, he incorporated Bharti Telecom Limited (BTL) and his company became the first in India to offer push-button telephones, establishing the basis of Bharti Enterprises. This first-mover advantage allowed Sunil Mittal to expand his manufacturing capacity elsewhere in the telecommunications market. Bharti Enterprises went public in 2002,
