1. Introduction:
This report is investigating the Task environment and Mega environment of two major companies in New Zealand; Air New Zealand and Fonterra. The Task environment of a company involves the Customers/Clients, Competitors, Suppliers, Labour Supply and Government Agencies that interact and affect the business. What happens in the Task environment of a business is influenced by what happens in the Mega environment which includes the political/legal, economic, sociocultural, technological and international elements which occur in the world and society around the business. This report will aim to identify and compare the specific elements involved in Air New Zealand and Fonterra’s Task environments and how their Mega environments impacts on this. Air New Zealand Limited is New Zealand’s national airline which contains both international and domestic flight services. It provides both passenger and cargo services to 27 domestic and 27 international locations. The company was awarded airline of the year in 2010 and 2012 by the Air Transport Awards and is one of the biggest companies in New Zealand. Fonterra Co-operative Group Limited is the leading exporter of dairy products in the world. It is the world’s largest milk processing company and exports to many countries in the world. It is responsible for over 30% of the world’s dairy exports and is co-operatively shared by around 10,500 New Zealand dairy farmers. It is also one of the biggest companies in New Zealand.

2. Air New Zealand’s Task Environment
2.1 Customers and Clients
As Air New Zealand is the main airline in New Zealand it has a wide range of customers and clients. As it caters for domestic travel to places in which other airlines do not travel it is often the only option (other than driving) for people travelling to those areas, for example people travelling from Christchurch to New Plymouth. Customers of Air New Zealand range from families and individuals travelling around New Zealand to customers on business from overseas destinations. Air New Zealand provides airfares which range in price and feature to cater for all people from the lower/middle class to the upper class, for example they provide ‘grabaseat’ fares which are a cheaper way to fly with just carry-on baggage and would cater to the less wealthy. Most people in New Zealand would in their lifetime have flown in an Air New Zealand service which means that a high majority of New Zealand are customers of the company. They also make their services attractive to businesses as they offer rewards for businesses that frequently use Air New Zealand, so they have both private and business travel customers.
