All the tribes living in this hill district are mainly depending on agriculture. The primitive system of Jhuming cultivation are common among all the tribes. The practice of Jhuming not only destroy the micro flora and fauna but also affect ecological balance by destroying forest.

So, an attempt has been made through this scheme to replace Jhum by permanent cultivation, terrace cultivation. Moreover the Soil of this hilly region is very suitable summer as well as winter paddy.

Horticulture is the main occupation in the district of N.C. Hills farmers. The altitude varies from 800meters to 1200 meters and average rainfall around 2300 mm and temperatures varies from 6 to 12 degree C in winter and 17 -33 degree C in summer. Out of total geographical area of 4888 sq. km. around 1.88 lakh hectares is suitable for cultivation and 80% of the cultivable land is suitable for horticultural crops. Potential for horticultural development is very bright along with canning and processing industry as this district produces huge quantity of quality pineapple, oranges and ginger through purely organic method as use of agrochemicals is virtually non-existent.

However, all the tribes of this hilly district are mainly dependant on destructive slash and burn method of cultivation or Jhuming and in the process forest cover has been largely denuded and ecosystem has been damaged. According to topography, rainfall and other geographical factors the district has been divided into three parts, consisting of the development blocks,

1st Part--- Diyungbra ITDP and Diyung valley Block.- This particular area comprises mainly of foothill and plains is suitable for field crops such as Sugarcane, Maize, Oil seeds, paddy, pulses and tropical horticultural crops like coconut, areca nut, cashew nut, mango, mousambi, litchi etc.

Q2. What are the different ways of increasing the production on the same piece of land? Ans: Following are the 5 different ways of increasing the production on the same piece of land: 1. Use of multiple cropping. It means growing more than one crop on a given piece of land at the same time. 2. Use of HYV’s. These can be used to produce much greater amounts of grain in a single plant. 3. Chemical fertilizers and Pesticides. Electricity run tubewells irrigate much larger area in a more effective manner and increase the yields. Q3. How do medium and large farmers obtain capital for farming? How is it different from the small farmers? Ans: Medium and large farmers sell surplus farm produce in the market and earn good money. The money so earned is used to buy capital for farming in the next season. Thus medium and large farmers are able to arrange for capital for farming from their own savings. On the other hand, small farmers do not have their own savings because their production is small which is mainly used for fulfilling their own family needs. Small farmers therefore, avail loans from the medium and large farmers at very high rates of interest. Small farmers also borrow money from various inputs for cultivation. These farmers are put to a great distress to repay the loan.…

During the First millennium, the entire Indian subcontinent had dense forests with scattered islands of cultivation. The chronicles of Greek and Chinese writers recorded the luxurious forests which were inaccessible to man in the land between Himalayas and Vindyas. The economic and cultural life of the nation centered on rivers and forests and they were held to be sacred. Animal life flourished in the dense forests without the fear from man. The impenetrable forests provided the desired habitat for the healthy growth and sustenance to wildlife. The situation, however, changed dramatically in the last century of the Second millennium. Growth of civilization, industrialization world over, population pressure associated with the demand for food and requirement of more agricultural land had its impact on the forests of the subcontinent. The land between the Himalayas to Kanyakumari with isolated and sporadic human settlements of the 1st millennium has today sprawling human settlements, ever expanding cities and towns, increasing network of transportation channels. Thus the modernization has resulted in the same land of the 1st millennium look more like full of manmade structures. The forests are now scattered and isolated and mostly restricted to the protected areas enforced by legal provisions.…
