Africa: A Part Of The Modern World
The Western World is the leading example of a modern society. Countries across the globe are influenced by the West, and look to become a modern society like that of the west making them indistinguishable from each other. In doing so, individuality and identity is lost. Rasheed Araeen speaks about Africa’s artists being influenced by the western society in his essay, “Modernity, Modernism, and Africa’s Place in the History of Art of Our Age”. In his essay, Araeen reveals that artists of Africa’s attempts to mirror the west only leads to their downfall, and what must be done to overcome the problems encountered by these artists.
Modernism by Africa’s artists has lead to a prosperous modern African society, but also to the downfall of modern artists within Africa. Araeen opens up his essay stating that “Africa wants to have everything that the |West produces or possesses, regardless of whether the desire to have everything imported is in the interest of Africa or not” (Araeen 412). Araeen reveals that Africa’s artist do all they can to mimic Western society into their society, but it does not always benefit them. Araeen elaborates in stating that, “ if we in Africa are unable to think, innovate, and produce for ourselves… then there is something wrong” (Araeen 412). He invites the idea that artists need to learn to think for themselves, and not imitate others because art is “about thinking, about perception, and about an ability to innovate” (Araeen 412), and this is the only way an artist can become successful. Araeen reveals that African artists do not receive the credit that they deserve for their art because the art produces “is no more than a gloss over what has been originated from the West” (Araeen 412).
