Affluenza is an obsessive, envious, keeping up with the Joneses attitude that has resulted in huge increases in depression and anxiety among millions in the world. Affluenza is symptomatic of a culture that holds up financial success as one of the highest achievements. The government is partially responsible for this outbreak but consumers have to assume some responsibility for the amount of damage they allow this disease to cause in their lives. The desire is always placed in front of you to acquire money and enjoy spending it but the bible tells us in 1 Timothy 6:10, "For the love of money is the root of all evil" so we can expect trouble anytime we allow it to run our country and our lives. Should we try to cure it? If so how? Government involvement? Move away from Capitalism? Marketing restrictions? In my opinion the majority of the cure has to come on an individual basis by minimizing our spending and desire for things that we do not need. We can reduce consumption and waste; choose work that reflects our values and work to live in better balance with the environment. We can also work and shop less, spend more time with friends and family, volunteer in our communities, and enjoy our lives more. For these things we do not need government but it would help if they wouldn’t build a new shopping center, restaurant or car dealership within every 10 miles. The possibility of moving away from capitalism is not the best answer for us in my opinion because it would decrease the livelihood of so many who own businesses by changing to another economic system. However, I do think marketing restriction should be enforced to reduce abundance in retail chains crowding the market.
