NIGERIAN INSTITUTION OF ESTATE SURVEYORS AND VALUERS
The profession of estate surveying and valuing is defined as the art, science and practice of determining the value of all descriptions of property and of the various interests therein. The Nigerian Institution of Estate Surveyors and Valuers, NIESV was founded in 1969 by the few qualified General Practice Chartered Surveyors who were trained mainly in the United Kingdom. Six years later, the Institution was granted official government recognition by the promulgation of the Estate Surveyors and Valuers (Registration etc.) Act popularly referred to as Decree No. 24 of 1975 now CAP III of Laws of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (1990). By this legislation, the Estate Surveyors and Valuers Registration Board of Nigeria (ESVARBON) came into being as the regulatory body for the profession. The institution was incorporated on June 1, 1970 under the: Land (Perpetual Succession) Act Cap. 98. The Nigerian Institution of Estate Surveyors and Valuers, NIESV aims to represent the general interests of the profession, maintain a high standard of conduct and practice and to improve the technical knowledge of its members. The goal is to provide an increased reservoir of skilled professional manpower that is well prepared to face the challenges of society, and to maintain adequate standard of professional practice, the institution strives to have a system of administration that is effective in service delivery and be able to motivate members to better corporate identity, to render proactive, ethical, innovative and value oriented customer services on sustainable basis and to promote inter-professional relationship, locally and internationally. The objectives includes,
enhancement of cross border skills and knowledge exchange particularly among African countries, (b)
fostering of cooperation with other international institutions and organisation who share similar aspirations and (c)
a kick-start of the initiative for an African Academy of Surveying and Land Economy. Membership of The Institution is open to all Nigerians, and in certain cases to foreigners trained in approved Institutions both in the country and abroad. There are six grades of Membership, namely Fellow, Associate, Graduate, Probationer, Student, Honorary Fellow and Corporate member. Professional Members, made up of Associates and Fellows, are those who have undergone the prescribed training, passed the qualifying examinations, obtained the necessary practical experience and taken the appropriate professional tests. Non-Professional Members, comprising Graduates, Probationers and Students, are persons in the process of taking the qualifying professional tests and examination, but are attached to the Institution meanwhile for the furtherance of their professional education. Honorary Fellows are persons who are not engaged in the practice of the profession, but by reason of their position, experience or eminence assist in promoting the objects of The Institution, have been admitted as such as the Institution Corporate members relate to corporate bodies duly admitted by the Institution. The Institution is affiliated to the Commonwealth Association of Surveying and Land Economy (CASLE), International Real Estate Federation (FIABCI), International Facility Management Association (IFMA), the, International Valuation Standards committee (IVSC), Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS) and the Association of Professional Bodies of Nigeria (APBN).
THE COMMONWEALTH ASSOCIATION OF SURVEYING AND LAND ECONOMY, CASLE.
