Thesis Statement: ADHD is a learning disorder that affects an estimated 4.1 percent of children ages 9-17. It is a real problem and parents and teachers should be more aware of the signs and symptoms, and most importantly how to handle a child with ADHD. Specific Goals: After completion of my speech, I hope the audience will:
*Gain a better understanding of what ADHD is.
*Know the signs and symptoms of ADHD.
*Understand the different coping choices for ADHD.
Introduction: ADHD is a real disorder with real struggles for the people who truly suffer from it. People who know nothing about ADHD say it is just an excuse to be lazy and the kid just needs a kick in the pants. Before I was diagnosed with ADHD I was told by my parents and teachers everyday that I just wasn’t trying hard enough in school. I was always grounded and being punished for something that I could not help. No one understood my struggles. No matter how hard I cried and tried to tell them I was trying, they insisted that I just needed to try harder. After a while I just wrote myself off as stupid, and thought to myself that I would never make it through not only school but life. My symptoms started in fourth grade and persisted through middle school and high school, and I was finally diagnosed my junior year of high school. The worst part is that I could not tell you anything I learned before my junior year of high school. The doctor told my parents that my ADHD was so severe that he was shocked that I was still in school. He told my parents to be thankful that I had softball in my life to keep me in school. Body:
