Addressing International Legal and Ethical Issues

Gentura broke their contract with CadMex when they started distributing ViroBlast which stopped the viral outbreak on Candor.   Legally CadMex has a lot at stake on the bottom line and Gentura wanted to sell it at a subsidized price and anyone who could afford it. This would cause CadMex to lose money. The ethical issue here is if CadMex stopped Gentura from doing this then innocent lives could be lost. CadMex made a few changes and allowed the drug to be distributed only after receiving a shared stake in the market with a second drug to cover the loss of profit. When Gentura breached the contact, this threatened the partnership and who was going to hold the patent on the drug.
CadMex had a legal right to sue Gentura for a breach of contract. Ethically they did the right thing by allowing lives to be saved and being in a foreign country they did what it took to ensure their relationship with the host country was not affected. This also kept them from getting any bad publicity.
To solve this issue we would need to install a utilitarian style of ethics. Utilitarianism is choosing which actions or what rules to follow that will be best for society. Ethically CadMex could have agreed with the subsidized price, worked out a new share of another marketable drug with Gentura. There by showing Candor that CadMex truly cared for the local population and wanted to see them healthy. Most would say that this was not acceptable, however in this case this is quite acceptable and these are the reasons why;
1. You need to be looking for a better way to do things that will benefit society.
2.     Everything is not as it seems.
3. It would not hurt CadMex to lose a little money, but with the right choices their reputation would get better in Candor.
In conclusion, we cannot stress enough about the importance of following the details of any contract that you enter and still be able to make changes that you can. [continues]
