ACROSS THE UNIVERSE by Julie Taymore

In the film Across The Universe by Julie Taymore the director uses many visual techniques that revel the way in which the characters have changed thought out the duration of the film. The characters that have changed the most and who the war affected the most are Max (who fought on the front line) and Paco (who was a protester in NY).

When we are first introduced to Paco he is leading a peaceful protest, using his voice as a tool to convey his message. Though a short the war has changed him into a person who forces their beliefs on others though violence. The director uses Paco costume to tell us about his feelings. In the scene ‘Revelation’ Paco is wearing a Khaki Jacket. He looks like a solider. This is telling us that Paco is a more destructive person; we can see the violence in his in his clothes. He is portrayed as a solider like figure. The director also uses colour to show emotion and gives us an insight to the character. When Paco comes out of the room with the walls painted red portrays the idea of death, blood and destruction. This expresses the idea Paco wants peace though any means including violence. This shows some kind of desperation coming from Paco cause he wants the war to end.

In the scene ‘Revelation’ the director uses a lot of symbolism to convey ideas about Paco and how he has changed. The big fist on the wall signifies power and violence, and the fist holding a peace sign signifies getting peace though violence which is what Paco is thinking. The director also referees to Chairman Mao , we see a big picture of him hung up on the wall. This is telling us that Paco want s violent change. He also has this guy next to him that looks like a Black Panther member, seeing he is associating with people like that is telling us Paco is changed into a more radical person. Throughout a short time the war has changed how Paco thinks and acts the director shows us this this helps us understand Paco better

The notorious drug war and wanton violence is taking over Mexico. The government and police seem to have no control over the situation as the drug cartels have the most power out of anyone in the country. However, there are a few who attempt to denounce the violence of the drug cartels that spreads across the country like a bloody wildfire through poetry, music, and painting. Javier Sicilia, a poet, denounces the drug violence that killed his son through his last poem and Marcos Castro painted a picture of the destruction of the Mexican culture and people, influenced by the lyrics from singer Lila Downs, who sang about death because of the drug trade in Mexico. Marcos Castro’s “La Reyna del Inframundo”, taken directly from Lila Downs’s lyrics, illustrates the control of violence over Mexico and its culture through the contrast between light and dark, referencing the battle between destruction and hope, shape, the spiral in the middle of the painting suggests a tornado of extermination, and scale and position of objects, namely the gun which exemplifies the emphasis on violence and death.…

The mural painted by an artist shows a Hispanic man who’s going to war with other Hispanic men a few feet above him on horses. The man holds a weapon and a flag which resembles his country. His expression is nowhere near fear instead it’s courage and commitment on what he’s going to do. There’s a title stating “La Revolucion Mexicana” that translates to The Mexican Revolution that happened in Mexico. Then a phrase “I rather die on my feet than live on my knees” is a metaphor of what the man in the painting had to say. In relations to an image, this painting signifies a protest from the Hispanic…

All the world’s a canvas, and all the men and women merely the colors; They have their debuts and their disappearances into the background, and red in its time takes on many jobs; the coloration of a red sunrise of a wartime morning, and then the crimson blood of wounded soldiers bearing arms against brothers, and the last scene of all, that ends this strange eventful history, is scarlet dusk bathing the war-torn battlefield as it dips beyond the horizon.…

It resonates within Richard’s life from when he was a child until the rest of the story. Not surprisingly, Juan Rubio’s life also had its fair share of violence. Juan fought in multiple wars, killed many men, and is infamous for being a brutal and ruthless war hero. Richard first starts to show signs of following his father’s footsteps when he got in his first fight. Richard has many fights, and usually loses them. At one point, Richard is even offered money to fight. This violence seemed uninteresting Richard, but again he relapses with his relationship with Zelda and the Pachucos. He often wrestled and play fought with Zelda. However it can be speculated that this play fighting is even more deep-rooted, shadowing the actions of his father at home with Consuelo. As with the Pachucos, Richard is very intrigued by a group of soldiers wearing zoot suits, and begins associating himself with them. They perform dubious acts, and encourage Richard to join them in a gang fight. Lastly, the final resonance of violence happens when World War II starts. Richard’s Japanese friend, Thomas, gets beat up and he is being sent to an internment camp. Richard consults his Pachuco friends to defend Thomas by ganging up on the people that beat him…

Misto uses an array of projected images on stage to illustrate the horrors of war to the audience. The photographs projected behind the women, as they retell their struggles, supports their stories by transporting them and the audience back into the past and providing additional information on the horrific events and the damage the events had on each woman. The physical and mental harm endured by the Japanese captives are exemplified by images of emaciated women. These images bring Bridie and Sheila’s memories to life for the audience and puts emphasis on how horrid and disgusting prison life was for the captives. The contrast and juxtaposition of photographs between army nurses boarding ships, with happy and excited expressions on their faces, together with the dialogue, “it was hard to believe we were on the brink of war”, displayed that the nurses were comfortable in their environment. These Images and dialogue contrast further photographs of burning ships with clouds of smoke filling the sky, highlighting how quickly the situation and environment changed for the women and the fiery destruction left behind. An image of a Japanese soldier’s face is displayed to the audience, portraying a warrior, instilling fear into the audience and illustrating the fierceness and terrifying nature of the Japanese soldiers. The photograph is enhanced with the dialogue “The Japs’d come around and beat us for the fun of it. ‘Useless Mouths’ they used to call us”, this adds to the audiences feelings of…

Vision need not be fully articulated, may be so internalized that it goes largely unquestioned. May not be explicitly developed into a systematic conception of life. May not be theoretically deepened into a philosophy. may not even be codified into creedal form. May be greatly refined thru cultural historical development. Vision is a channel for ultimate beliefs which give direction and meaning to life. Integrative and interpretative framework by which order and disorder are judged. Standard by which reality is managed and pursued. Set of hinges on which all our everyday thinking and doing turns.…
