Introduction

A growing trend in organizations is to create teams to accomplish business objectives. However, forming teams without sound business reasons may be detrimental. Creating a teamed workforce should be a reflection of a strategic business decision. "Teams are a means to an end, not an end in themselves" (HR Magazine, May 1999). Further, developing a team environment is not without risk or expense; it takes time, careful planning, extensive training, and patience.
