Accounting Memo
TO: EXECUTIVE PICE PRESIDENT
FROM: ACCOUNTING TEAM MATE
SUBJECT: LIFO-FIFO EXPLANATION
DATE: SEPTEMBER 20, 2010

EXECUTIVE VICE PRESIDENT The overview of Last In/First Out and First In/Last Out is now completed for the date and time of your choice to discuss the company matters. The information from last month is was completed at the end of the month and the present is kept current on a daily base as management needs to be up to date of the inventory and financial levels of the company. Reducing federal and state income corporate taxes are important as this may allow the company to see a decrease in expenses over the time. Looking at the expenses of the company and viewing the incomes of the employees will allow the company to make the decision as to Last In/First Out or First In/Last Out to save the company finances. Although looking at the inventory will allow the management to view the Last In/First Out and First In/Last Out as to the timing of the inventory growth. Using First In/Last Out will allow the company to still grow as the inventory increases and the company will still profit. Using Last In/First Out will allow the company to be at a stand point and no increases are made. Understanding the decision that is made must be final, this information will be viewed and continued to be up to date for any financial issues that may arise before and after the meeting and decisions are made. By looking at the short and long term on Cost of Goods Sold this will allow you to make the judgment of the Last In/First Out and First In/Last Out and it shows the profit for the company in the past and allow you to predict the future. Good luck with your decision and I stand by you on the choice that is made.
Thank you

History of SOX - the Sarbanes-Oxley Act of 2002 is legislation in response to the high profile financial scandals, such as seen with Enron and WorldCom. The purpose of this act is to protect shareholders and the general public from accounting errors and fraudulent business practices. The Sarbanes-Oxley Act introduced stringent new rules to protect investors by improving the accuracy and reliability of corporate disclosures made pursuant to the securities laws. Sarbanes-Oxley is not a set of business practices and does not specify how a business should store records; rather, Sarbanes-Oxley defines which records are to be stored and for how long.…

As a current student of your Accounting 387 course I can agree with the implications of concern with exams and also agree that often exams do not necessarily reflect students abilities due to the time constraints as well as the stress and pressure that students are under during examination time. I feel that a take home exam is better assessment to evaluate student’s capabilities and knowledge of the subject but I would find it nieve of you to believe that classmates wouldn’t assist one another in completing the exam. I can honestly say that if faced with difficultly I completing my take home exam and my final grade depended heavily a pond it I would definitely consult with other classmates to get it done.…

Once I finished reviewing the Accounting Memo sent to Andrew and team mates. I found several items that need to be changed in order to be re-directed to the Chief Financial Officer. This memo was written very informal since this was directed to a fellow team mate. All formal method of communication need to write out the entire word. In this case the word memo was abbreviated instead of writing out memorandum. There is no abbreviation and always use complete sentences. Rewording the memorandum and reorganizing the words will make a more complete and will cost no confusion to the reader. Example, for this memo, “We will have a meeting this Wednesday to discuss the Last In/First Out versus First In/First Out methods and the cost of goods. The Chief Financial Officer will need to present this information to the company’s president and board later this month.” Now the second paragraph could start by saying, “In order to continue reducing our federal and state taxes we recommend to continue with the use of LIFO. This way we can avoid getting to any inflationary economic issues. The abbreviations once again are used with P&L. The entire word Profit & Loss Statements needs to be written out to avoid confusion. The two bullet points are incorrect as noted. We could replace both bullet points by making to two complete sentences. Final paragraph has no relation to the entire memorandum. There is no need to talk about other companies that do not have any relation to our concerns. This memo was written without taking into consideration the audience. Memorandums weather informal or formal need to be written in a professional format. This is regardless who the audience might be. Many times memorandums are sending as a group message and this could include coworkers, upper level managers or even the CFO and the company’s president.…

If we make decision based on NPV or IRR or PI, we should accept this project. This is because the project has a positive NPV, its PI over 1 and the IRR is more than the required rate of return. All of this factors mean that the project can actually benefit the company. However, since your company required that all the projects have a payback period of 2 years or less and a discounted payback period of 2.5 years or less, I recommend that you should reject this particular project. This is because the exact Payback Period and discounted Payback Period are 4.62 years and 5.58 years, which are far beyond the requirements. Therefore, the project should be reject.…
