ABSTRACT
This research project is focused on the growth and impact of the e-commerce industry and how it has revolutionized global trade by practically, and amongst others scaled down some of the major impediments that have hitherto plagued the globalization endeavors. This study examines the milestones related to this industry in light of both the potential and the actual impact by citing a few organizations that have recorded a near total transformation both in their business processes, revenue and general growth.
DEFINITION OF CONCEPTS
Computer: The very basic definition of this word actually was a human being. They were indeed the first computers! Even a shallow delve into the history books of this machine that has almost taken over our lives today will readily reveal that a ‘computer’ was actually a person – a job title! These were people – and this might come as a shocker – predominantly women, whose duty was to perform more or less repetitive calculations required to compute such things as tables, tide charts, planetary positions and such calculations. Imagine you had a job where hour after hour and day after day you had to do nothing but compute multiplications and additions amongst other calculations. Boredom would quickly set in; and…if you are like me who is already thinking of my Excel software, would be so unproductive! (Appendix). Today, a computer is defined as a machine that is able to receive input, to store and manipulate that input (data) to provide output in a useful format. These machines have come a long way from the abacus, early calculators and complex mainframe types to the modern day computers that are extremely versatile. Capabilities such as storage and executing lists of instructions have set them apart from early gadgets like the calculators. They are now key factors in the information age.
The Information Age: Also known as the Computer age or Information era, this refers to a concept that suggests the current age will be uniquely defined by their rather limitless transfer or access to knowledge that was previously...
