I used the keywords academic honesty and online courses to find the articles. The first article is entitled Perceptions of Academic Honesty in Online vs. Face-to-Face Classrooms by Michael Spaulding. The article is peer-reviewed and was published in Winter 2009. The second article is A Review of Cheating in Fully Asynchronous Online Courses: A Math or Fact-Based Course Perspective by Sven Trenholm, it is peer-reviewed and was published in 2006/2007. I found the articles in the University Library under the Ebscohost Directory.
There are so many issues related to online academic honesty. The most well-known problem is using someone else’s work and turning it in as your own without giving them the full credit they deserve. Receiving help from your family and friends on an assignment, and writing what they said verbatim and not giving them credit is also academic dishonesty. Both of these instances are more formally known as Plagiarism. If students are caught for plagiarism, they can fail the class and even be expelled from school. One important step to avoid academic dishonesty would be to manage your time wisely. If students would give themselves enough time to research their papers and write them, they would be less likely to copy and paste someone else’s work. If they wait until the last minute to complete their papers, there is a very high probability that there will be some plagiarizing going on. When someone is rushing and crunched for time, he or she will do anything, even plagiarism, to make sure they turn their assignments in on time.
I make sure I allot myself an efficient amount of time to do research and write my paper; therefore I can go back reread it and correct any unnecessary and unintentional mistakes.
