Abortion: Why?
She was bright in her early years, showing promise as early as third grade. She loved to talk about how much she wanted to help the homeless, even at the age of 12! She set up a program in an inner city to help the underprivileged, gaining her respect and adoration. She had a family, an identity, a future. She changed lives. She may have changed YOUR life someday, had her mother not made the decision to abort her. Today, I ask you, the people of the world, to consider this; when one life is lost, no matter how early in gestation, we lose the benefits of that life, the futures of the people that life touched, and the lives they may have created. There are, of course, scientific and moral concerns on both sides of the argument, but today I'm going to ask you a simple question: Why not? Why not let them live? Let these beings, still in thought, the seeds of human potential and promise, live! I will pose to you points and counterpoints in the attempt to steer you the best choice; the choice of life. A main spot of contention is the very essence of life: when is a person, a person? The Association of Pro-Life Physicians states "life begins at fertilization, when a sperm unites with an oocyte. From this moment, the being is highly organized, has the ability to acquire materials and energy, has the ability to respond to his or her environment, has the ability to adapt, and has the ability to reproduce (the cells divide, then divide again, etc., and barring pathology and pending reproductive maturity has the potential to reproduce other members of the species)." (Moore & Persaud, The Developing Human, p.310; Nilsson & Hamberger, A Child is Born, p.86; Rugh & Shettles, From Conception to Birth, p.217.) However, some scientists postulate human life begins around day 18, when the heart of the fetus starts beating. Does this mean a person is a person at the moment of conception, or when the thing that defines us, a beating heart, is formed? Regardless of

At the heart of the political debate about whether the federal government should sponsor and pay for the research of embryonic stem cell is the cultural and political idea of when human life begins. This question is the most important one in the process of either banning or allowing and funding the research. It is clear that murder is against both the moral/ethical and legal code in this country and in most others. In this paper I will formally reconstruct Don Marquis’ argument, explain it, and offer a brief evaluation. In his essay, “Why Abortion Is Immoral,” Marquis argues that abortion is, except possibly in rare cases, seriously immoral, because it is in the same moral category as killing an innocent adult human being. His argument can be formulated as follows: killing an innocent human being is morally wrong. If abortion falls into the category if killing an innocent human being, then it is morally wrong as well. Abortion does fall into the category of killing an innocent human being, therefore it is morally wrong.…

Abortion is arguably the most controversial moral issue in America. While some people with a conservative view toward abortion believes that abortion is wrong and should not be legal under any circumstance, some people with liberal view believes that abortion is ok at any stage for any reason. Many people seemed to have a moderate view on the issue, where they believe that some abortions are wrong while some abortions are not, depending on the circumstances that led to the pregnancy and as well as the reasons behind the decision of abortion. Rosalind Hurthouse is one such individual; she believes that abortion is only appropriate if it is deemed necessary through virtue ethics.…

The difficult question of when life actually begins has often led to several complicated and controversial decisions worldwide. Does life commence at twenty four weeks’ gestation, when a foetus can continue to exist outside the womb or twenty two weeks, because of recent advances in bio-medical healthcare? Can this timeline be brought down to eight weeks, when an embryo is deemed a foetus or should life simply begin from conception, as Muslims, Christians, and Buddhists believe? Abortion and foeticide (any act that causes the death of the foetus, including foetal homicide) are the two most commonly debated aspects of foetal law and ethics (Chervenak & McCullough, 2009).…

    Why Abortion Is Immoral

    • 491 Words
    • 2 Pages

Why Abortion Is Immoral was written by Don Marquis. His thesis is described in the title. He started off by establishing some historical facts about abortion. According him there were no laws prohibiting abortion in the United States until well into the 19th century. By the 20th century every state passed laws to prohibit it. In 1973 in the case Roe vs. Wade, the Supreme Court ruled that the laws outlawing abortion violated women’s rights to privacy. He then implies that the legal status of abortion could possibly change in the near future. Marquis believes that the crucial moral question about abortion is “Do we have the same reasons not to kill a fetus that we have not to kill an adult?” He believes it’s wrong because it deprives them of their future. According to Marquis, abortion is seriously immoral with rare exceptions.…

Approximately 1.3 million unplanned pregnancies end in abortion every year. Women believe that there are many reasons to abort such as fear of having or raising a child, not having enough money, or having complications with their work responsibilities or their education. Whatever the situation, I believe that there is no acceptable reason to get an abortion. Some important reasons why women should not abort have to do with human values, religious values, and values of conscience.…

What does it mean to be a 'human being '? When does a human fetus become a 'human being '? At what point does an individual physical being come into existence? Is there any morally relevant break along the biological process of development from the unicellular zygote to birth? The common foundation of abortion arguments will answer the initial question of what defines life, or more specifically, at what point in the development of the fetus the line should be drawn between life and non-life. Some argue it is from the moment of conception, others pick some arbitrary measurement of the pregnancy, and a considerable number of…

Development from a fertilized egg into to baby is a continuous process and any attempt to pinpoint when personhood begins is arbitrary. A human embryo is a human being in the embryonic stage, just as an infant is a human being in the infant stage. Although an embryo does not currently have the characteristics of a person, it will become a person and should be given the respect and dignity of a person.…
