Women get abortions for many reasons such as for rape, teen pregnancy and health reasons. In 1973 the Supreme Court’s Roe vs. Wade decided on abortion being legal for women to have the right to choose what they do with a pregnancy. Trying to make laws against abortion is not going to stop them; this just makes them less safe. The number of women who get abortions does not change when it goes from being legal to illegal, or vice versa. The only thing that changes is more women die. Every year, seventy eight thousand, women die from unsafe abortions. Nearly all abortions take place in the first trimester, when a fetus cannot exist independent of the mother. As it is attached by the placenta and umbilical cord, its health is dependent on her health, and cannot be regarded as a separate entity as it cannot exist outside her womb. Rape is one of many reasons that cause women to choose abortion to end their pregnancies. Fourteen thousand abortions are done because of rape in the United States. What to do about their pregnancy is mandatory, although many felt they were ending a life. They are wise enough to know how they would treat their illegitimate child. They hate their rapist, and worry that if they kept their babies, they would hate their children for reminding them of such a painful time. Some will say that this is taking away the fathers right’s but what about the mothers right? Were they not taken away when she was raped? In this case a woman deserves the right to make the choice to have an abortion. Women who have been raped can have problems delivering the child and suffer from lifelong problems that can affect her life and a child’s life greatly. In the case of rape or incest, forcing a woman made pregnant by this violent act would cause further psychological harm to the victim. Often a woman is too afraid to speak up or is unaware she is pregnant, thus the morning after pill is ineffective in these situations. Many would argue that these women could endure the pregnancy, spending nearly a year of her life simply re-living the rape and its effects over and over again, to give up a baby at the end of it for adoption. However, we all are aware of the fact that there are millions of unwanted children awaiting adoption as we speak who remain unclaimed; in fact, UNICEF estimates that there are two hundred and ten million orphans in the world right now. If they have no one willing to be their parent or guardian, why would another baby have a better chance? Another reason that causes women to choose abortion is health problem. There is a range of problems, including the child being born with Down's syndrome, Cystic Fibrosis, or a disposition to obesity, which later in life can cause clogged arteries and heart failure. In another case, people must often make choice between saving the mother, already a functioning member of society, or letting her die to try and save the baby. Also harm to the mother during labor or just during pregnancy itself. One in eight thousand four hundred seventy five hundred women die from pregnancy complications. Many complications that can result in death are known, such as sepsis which is a severe infection of the blood, blood clots that affect the brain and heart, stoke and anesthesia related deaths. Nearly eighty percent of deaths occur from the complications just listed, twenty percent of deaths occur from unknown causes related to pregnancy. Women who suffer from a chronic disease increase the likely hood of death compared to those women who are healthy. Twelve percent of women included a physical problem with their health among reasons for having an abortion. Young women between the ages of fifth teen and nineteen account for at least five million abortions every year, one million of them in the United States. In fact, one of every five pregnancies happens to a teen-age girl. In situations like this, some people are sure that they could take care of the child, while others know that they aren't ready or mature enough to take so much responsibility. In many cases the child would have no one to rely on but a single mother with no schooling, and maybe a non-supportive family. He or she would have a twisted, miserable upbringing, left vulnerable later in life. Thirty four percent of girls will get pregnant in their teen years. Sixty two percent of teens will have sex before graduating high school. Teenagers who become mothers have grim prospects for the future. They are much more likely to leave of school; receive inadequate prenatal care; rely on public assistance to raise a child; develop health problems; or end up divorced.
