Americans are divided about abortion.  A majority favors legalized abortion in the hard cases: rape, incest, and threat to the life of the mother -- though keep in mind that these account for less, and probably a lot less, than 8% of all abortions.  Very few support Obama's extreme position of abortions for any reason at any time, including the third trimester. Contrary to Obama's view that abortion is a good thing, most Americans who support abortion think that it is, under certain circumstances, an unfortunate necessity.  In fact, Americans' support for abortion appears stronger than it is because many Americans think that abortion is more legally restricted than it really is. In a poll which tried to determine what Americans know about what is and isn't legal with regards to abortion, only 29% knew what the law actually is.  Fifty percent believed that the law is far more restrictive than it actually is. Many Americans do not know that currently, based on the Supreme Court decisions of Roe v. Wade and Doe v. Bolton, abortion is legal for any reason up until the second a child is born. While some progress has been made at the state level on issues such as parental notification, the only laws passed to date that actually limit abortion, by restricting it to the first 20 weeks of pregnancy, have not yet been upheld by the Supreme Court. Experience shows that a significant majority of Americans favor some restrictions on abortion. Even very liberal pro-abort diehards have voted to require medical care for babies who survive botched abortions.  Bill Clinton wanted to keep abortion rare.  The Congress banned partial birth abortion.  Many states have passed parental consent bills, eliminating the situation where a 13-year-old girl can get an abortion but not an aspirin without her parents' consent.  Some states have passed laws to limit abortions to before the 20th week of pregnancy.  Seventy-nine percent of Americans believe that abortion should be legal only in the...
