As a twenty-six year old man who works two full time jobs in addition to being a full time student, stress is no stranger. Stress is something, which every person deals with everyday, in every aspect of his or her lives. Stress has been defined in a multitude of ways by countless of psychologists. According to the Merriam-Webster online dictionary(n. d.) ”Stress; a state of mental tension and worry caused by problems in your life, work, etc.”. Stress can be defined psychologically as an unpleasant state of emotional and physiological arousal that people experience in situations that they perceive as dangerous or threatening to their well being (Tenibiaje2011).
There are many different kinds of stress. The most common types of stress that are defined are acute stress, episodic acute stress, and chronic stress, and each of these different types of stress show their own symptoms. Acute stress is the most common type of stress. Acute stress has been noted to be the result following individuals dealing with high demands and pressure of their recent past and the demands anticipated by them in the near future. Symptoms of acute stress are emotional distress, heart palpitations, high blood pressure and muscular problems. Episodic acute stress is the stress, which is dealt with by those who suffer from acute stress frequently, yet their lives are in frequent disorder or chaos. Symptoms of episodic acute stress range from headaches, hypertension, chest pain, and even heart disease. Chronic stress is the grinding stress that wears people out day after day, year after year, and is a constant daily struggle. This is the stress, which can lead to severe symptoms including violence, stroke, cancer, and even suicide.
