1. Write an essay (700-900 words) in which you analyze and interpret Abduction. To put your interpretation of Abduction into perspective, your essay must include a discussion of at least two of the other items listed below. One of these must be a text.
The text Abduction is written by Shelagh Delaney. The text talks about a woman who is very ahead of her age. She and her family have lived in Manchester while her siblings and herself grew up. When she found a job in London in a children’s hospital she didn’t hesitate, she bought a house in Kensington and moved there straight away. After she had settled in the house, she went back home and kidnapped her sixteen-year-old brother, who had just finished school, to come live with her.
Actually the story is not about her, but about her little brother. The story focuses on how she raises him and finds a job for him, and how he is spoiled rotten, which gets the better of him in the end. He gets his girlfriend pregnant, and then marries her and they live together, the girlfriend then kicks him out because he is never sober and she doesn’t want him near the child. He is an alcoholic, but the sister won’t believe it, so she keeps giving him money and he keeps spending it on alcohol. The story ends by telling that he is dead, and what his last thoughts had been.
I believe that the narrator of this text is one of Ann’s siblings; it says in line 35 “He’d been born late in our parents’ marriage and was much younger than she was.” This proves that there is some sort of relation between the narrator and the characters in the text.
The fact that the story begins with the narrator talking about murdering Ann is very troubling and an odd way to start a story. It makes the text more appetizing; however it is difficult to understand what the beginning has to do with the rest of the text.
The word Abduction means kidnapping which describes the story really well.... [continues]
